Family Education Workshop

Whether a family is impacted by addiction, trauma, mental or physical illness, or maladaptive habits, all members deserve support. For this reason, we offer a workshop for families that offer tools for their own journey of healing. Family members can improve the chances of loved ones staying in healthy recovery by acquiring the knowledge and skills to best support them, as well as themselves.

The Family Education Workshop runs the Tuesday and Wednesday of two consecutive weeks each month. This workshop is specifically designed with you in mind and is a safe space for you to learn more effective strategies for understanding, managing, and coping with chronic illnesses, which mental health and substance use disorders are.

Your loved one in treatment will not be attending this workshop and sessions will be focused on general information that family members can implement, where appropriate and relevant. Clinicians will not be discussing specific and individual items that pertain to your loved one in treatment during this forum. However, there will be a time provided for questions at the end of each session.

The workshop is organized into 8 Modules across the 4 days. Workshops run from 6:00 pm EST/EDT until 8:30 EST/EDT.

Day 1
Module 1- Addiction
Module 2- Mental Health
Day 2
Module 3: Introduction to CBT & DBT
Module 4: Introduction to SUDS & Trauma
Day 3
Module 5: Interpersonal Effectiveness
Module 6: Creating a Validating Environment
Day 4

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the individual in treatment attend virtually as well or is this exclusively for family members/others supporting that person?

Answer: The family education workshop is designed for the family members/supports. Having said that, if the individual in recovery is in the home post inpatient treatment or during their outpatient treatment and wants to observe the workshop that is not a problem, it is up to you. The information can be useful for both the family and the individual in recovery from mental health and substance use. We have tailored the topics and materials for family members. It is discussed during the workshop that just as your loved one with mental health and substance use disorder requires recovery, you as the family members/supporters may also require your own recovery.

Is the workshop online and are there any programs that need to be installed?

Answer: The Family Education Workshop will be in a webinar format. All you need to do is click on the link and join during the sign-in period. If you are late to the sign-in period you can join afterwards as well. The workshop is run through zoom and you do not need to have zoom installed on your computer, tablet, or phone. If you already have the zoom application installed on your device that is okay, but not required in order for you to access the workshop. You can sign-in using the provided link or the username and password. All the instructions and link to the webinar are sent out the week prior.

Are we able to participate during the workshop?

Answer: You can ask questions directly through the chat. Your questions will be answered either privately by the hosts or asked directly to the speakers. Your name will not be used when the speaker is asked or is answering your questions. If you have any questions afterwards, please reach out to the Family Programs Coordinator. #4 Will the materials (power points and handouts) be provided? Answer: Yes, all of the materials used during the workshop will be emailed out the week after. The materials will be sent to you confidentially through email (BCC) for you to have and review at your leisure. We will also provide previous recordings of each presentation in case you missed one or cannot attend.
