A 2020 study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health links discrimination in healthcare settings to disparities in healthcare access among Indigenous people living in urban centres, and pointed out that “critical gaps remain in our understanding of Indigenous health in Canada.” In short, neglect, abuse, lack of cultural understanding and/or discrimination from healthcare practitioners means the medical needs of some Indigenous people won’t be met. By referring to an anticolonial lens, we can review the current conditions of our healthcare system and consider how deconstructing social constructs with cultural consultations can positively impact both, Indigenous people and the healthcare system including the professionals who work within the system.
