With Dr. Ian King, psychiatrist at EHN Edgewood Nanaimo

Join Dr. Ian King on February 20th from 12pm – 1pm for a thought provoking webinar that explores the complex psychological and relational aspects of prescribing medications.  This discussion will challenge the common notion that pharmacotherapy treatments can be reduced to solely biological mechanisms, while overlooking the crucial role of meaning, relationship and context in modulating pharmacotherapy outcomes.   Looking beyond strictly “biological” effects, we will explore other important sources of resistance to medication treatment, often found within patients’ subjective systems of meaning, issues within the therapeutic alliance, or even arise from prescriber’s own biases, expectations or countertransference reactions.  Case-based examples will be used to illustrate how these insights can inform more effective, patient-centred approaches to managing common psychiatric complaints in patients with substance use disorders.

Date: Thur., February 20, 2025
Time: 12pm – 1pm EST

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the limitations of a solely biological approach to pharmacotherapy
  • Develop an understanding of the interplay between biological, psychological and relational factors in affecting treatment outcomes
  • Apply these concepts to optimize treatment of substance use disorders and psychiatric comorbidities in multidisciplinary treatment settings.

Thank you for your interest in our upcoming webinar. We have a maximum capacity of 1000 registrants, and once this limit is reached, registration will be closed.
