Eating disorders and their causes are often misunderstood: they’re based on vanity; only women experience them; and you can tell if someone has one by simply looking at them. These dangerous myths often mean that those who are struggling don’t get the help they need.
At EHN Sandstone Recovery Centre, we offer a safe and compassionate environment dedicated to treating anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as well as their underlying causes. Keep reading for more about common eating disorders and how we can help.
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterized by extreme fear of gaining weight, as well as a distorted body image. People with anorexia often see themselves as overweight, even when they are dangerously underweight. As a result, they will severely limit their food intake to lose weight or exercise excessively.
Medical complications that may arise in those with anorexia nervosa include:
- Kidney problems
- Liver damage
- Osteoporosis
- Anemia
- Infertility
- Brain damage
- Damageto the digestive system
- Lowerblood pressure
- Irregular heartbeat
- Hairloss
Individuals with bulimia go through periods of binge eating, after which they purge the food that they have eaten. Most commonly, they do this through self-induced vomiting. Similar to individuals with anorexia, the self-esteem of individuals with bulimia very strongly depends on their body weight or body image.
Medical complications that may arise in those with bulimia nervosa include:
- Tooth decay
- Damage to theesophagus
- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Low blood pressure
- Dizziness or fainting
- Increased risk of heart failure in severe cases
