MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION TREATMENT FOR INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Culturally rooted treatment for addiction, depression, and anxiety.

Mental health challenges and substance use cross many social and cultural barriers—and for generations, Indigenous Peoples have carried an additional weight: colonization, land loss, residential schools, and systemic racism continue to take their toll. These historical harms have disrupted families, languages, and sacred ways of life, often leading to mental health concerns, addiction challenges, and psychological wounds that continue to impact Indigenous community members today.

In addition to our mental health and addiction treatment programs, EHN Canada is proud to offer our Indigenous Healing Program at EHN Edgewood Nanaimo. Developed by members of Indigenous communities, the Indigenous Healing Program draws on Indigenous lived experiences to provide treatment rooted in tradition and nature that can help restore balance. Our program exists thanks to the Indigenous voices that called for it—patients, families, and communities asking for care that feels safe, reflects Indigenous ways of knowing, and honours the strength needed to heal together.

Indigenous Peoples in Canada face disproportionate mental health and addiction challenges rooted in historical and ongoing trauma.

The probability of developing 2 or more substance use disorders during adolescence was 31% in Indigenous youth.

Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology

1 in 5 First Nations adults living off reserve reported having been diagnosed with an anxiety or mood disorder—over double the amount found in non-Indigenous adults.

Statistics Canada

Indigenous Canadians have nearly four times the risk of experiencing severe trauma than the non-Indigenous population.
